Chicago Gang Swing — Scarlett Sky

Chicago Gang Swing is Scarlett Sky’s cabaret-noir album built from old Chicago crime, nightlife, money, loyalty, bad judgment, crooked streets, dangerous women, polished men, and the peculiar logic of a city that could turn almost anything into business.

The album moves through South Side neighborhoods, Clark Street clubs, Lake Michigan nights, cab wars, police interrogations, prison tattoos, greenbacks, bachelors, gangsters, and women who understood very well that reputation could be manufactured. Some songs come from real people and events. Others use the period as a setting for original characters and stories. Together they form one Chicago world rather than a collection of disconnected vintage songs.

Musically, Chicago Gang Swing blends swing, jazz-blues, cabaret noir, brass, upright bass, smoky piano, muted trumpet, saxophone, and Scarlett Sky’s low female vocal style. The production carries the atmosphere of an old nightclub without pretending these are recordings from the period. They are new songs with a modern point of view, written inside an older room.

Darkly funny in places, romantic in others, and occasionally mean exactly where the story requires it, the album treats Chicago history as material for storytelling rather than museum display.

Toss something in Scarlett’s tip hat and help keep the Cabaret running—new songs, Noirtic Tales, videos, artwork, Graphic Mischief, and the continued feeding of one increasingly spoiled green Muser.

Consider it a small contribution toward keeping the music playing, the stories coming, and Scarlett Sky’s next bad idea properly funded.
